Ultrasound

Doctors looking at UltrasoundUltrasound – or sonography is a method of “seeing” inside the body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound is based on the same principles involved in the sonar used by bats and ships at sea. As the sound passes through the body, echoes are produced that can be used to identify how far away an object is, how large it is and how uniform it is. No ionizing radiation is used to produce these images. Ultrasound is useful for examining many of the body’s internal organs, including the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, blood vessels and pelvic anatomy. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show movement of internal tissues and organs and enable physicians to see blood flow and heart valve functions. Millions of parents have seen the first ”picture” of their unborn child with ultrasound.

Doctor giving a UltrasoundFor an optimal exam, be sure to follow any exam prep instructions we give you regarding diet or fluid intake. During this exam you will normally lay on a comfortable table while the tech moves the ultrasound transducer across your body to interrogate the area of interest ordered by your physician. A warm gel will be applied to the transducer so there is no gap between it and your skin. The tech may apply a small amount of pressure during scanning to allow for improved visualization of pertinent anatomy. You may also be asked to hold your breath. There are no known harmful side effects to conservative use of sonography. You will experience no side effects after the exam. Your doctor will inform you of the results.
